Powers and Abilities

Earthquake: As a catfish yōkai, Ōnamazu causes massive earthquakes at will. In manga, it was said that Ōnamazu caused the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake.

Immense Durability: The Ōnamazu has an immense level of durability, having no visible damage from the many attacks of the US Army, even a hydrogen bomb.

Heat Wind/Heat ray:

Black Gust:Ōnamazu in the third anime adaptation breathed a black wind from its mouth although it is unclear whether or not this belongs to the head wind ability from previous adaptations as none of Kitarō, Medama-Oyaji, and Ittan-Momen described about it being hot or not.

Tornadoes: Ōnamazu in manga causes tornadoes by warming the ground and creates updraft air currents with its heat wind/ray attacks.

  • Vacuum/Tornado Breath: Ōnamazu in the 1968 anime inhaled and caused tornado-like air vortex. It can be also launched as a tornado-like attack.

Light Generation: The Ōnamazu is able to emit light out of its eyes.

Eye beams: In the first anime adaptation, Ōnamazu shot destructive beams from its eyes.

Barbels: It can use its barbels in a manner similar to tentacles. It also stung Kitarō's left eye, making the hero to lose both of his natural eyes. Medama-Oyaji supported his son by sitting within his son's orbital and worked as a supporting eye.

Trivia

  • In Hakaba Episode 3, Mononoke mentioned that Mizugami fell asleep since the rampage of Azuma no Ōnamazu (東の大なまず, lit. Ōnamazu of the East or Ōnamazu of the Azuma region), but this is referring to the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake rather than actual Yōkai while Ōnamazu was said to caused the disaster in the GeGeGe no Kitarō manga.
