Third Anime[]

Aka-Atama appears in episode 48 of the third anime adaptation, Evolutionary Yōkai Kabuso . Aka-Atama lived on the moon so he could get away from humanity's developing civilization. But found that he could not even find any peace there when he found unmanned human probes nearby. He gave the Apple of Wisdom to a Kabuso that was in the probe so that the Kabuso could develop their own civilization and eventually go to war with humanity in the hopes of destroying human civilization.

But the plan failed when the Kabuso's society collapsed by itself, so he went down to Earth and planned to feed the Apple of Wisdom to all yōkai in the world, but was defeated by Kitarō when he was almost forced to eat the fruit himself. He accepted defeat and retreated to the moon, but not before warning Kitarō and the others that human civilization would one day eventually destroy themselves just like the Kabuso civilization did.[2]

Legend[]

Aka-Atama Original

Illustration of Aka-Atama by Shigeru Mizuki.

Aka-Atama's name was given from the legend of a strong man from the Tottori Prefecture while his appearance came from an unnamed child-like yōkai.

The legend states that when Aka-Atama was resting at a Kannon temple, the child-like yōkai appeared from nowhere and inserted a 5-inch nail into a pillar in the hall with his bare hand. Then he pulled it out again with minimal effort and soon began to play with it, repeatedly pulling it in and out with just a finger. Aka-Atama was stunned by this, so he tried to do the same thing, but he could barely insert the nail in even with both of his hands and he could not pull it out. The child yōkai mocked Aka-Atama for his efforts and left laughing.
