Akaname (あかなめ Akaname) is a yōkai.

Appearance[]

Personality[]

In the 2018 anime, Akaname is a mischievous yōkai, scaring the humans tenants who live in the apartment and teasing the landlords with Rokuro-Kubi and Karakasa. However after being beaten by Kitarō and given mercy by Haruo, they and the others stop scaring the tenants. They are rather quiet as they do not speak any words, only communicating with grunts and nods. They blush rather easily, having done so when being introduced and when they were complimented. They are also protective over the ones they care about as they went with Kitarō and the others to scare the boss of the loan shark yakuza and revealed themself to scare Hiro away to protect Natsumi. They are shown to have a liking to Shogi, playing it against Iwanabōzu.[1]

Shonen Sunday/1971 Anime[]

They appears in episode 28 of the second anime adaption, Akaname.

1985 Anime[]

They appears in episode 33 and 68 of the third anime adaption, Yōkai Akaname's Sorrowful Counterattack, and Dai-Kaijū's Angry Counterattack

They also appears in the third movie based on the third anime adaption, GeGeGe no Kitarō: Saikyō Yōkai Gundan! Nippon Jōriku!!.

1996 Anime[]

They appears along with Shiro-Uneri in episode 16 of the fourth anime adaption, Akaname and Shiro-Uneri.

2018 Anime[]

They appears in episode #23 of the sixth anime adaptation, The Yōkai Apartment Secret Story.[1]

They are among the crowd of yōkai gathered around the GeGeGe House, trying to drive Agnès out of the forest. They listen to Medama-Oyaji as he warns that if they drive her out then the tragedy Malay yōkai will repeat somewhere else. Soon followed by Kitarō as he explains how grave the consequences are if Japan becomes a part of Backbeard's empire, causing the crowd to look at one another. Until their attention is drawn to Kitarō as he stands on his resolve to fight.[2]

Powers and Abilities[]

Extendable Tongue: Akaname is able to extend their tongue, usually using it to lick the grime from bathrooms.[1]

Wall Climbing: Unique to the sixth anime, they are able to climb on walls and ceilings.[1]

Selective Invisibility: Akaname is capable of making themself invisible to those they choose, such as the priest that tried to exorcise them and the others from the apartment.[1]

Gas Cloud Generation: Akaname is able to create a purple gas cloud of filth by spinning their head and tongue around and sending it to their target.[1]

Vanishing and Appearing: Similar to other yōkai, Akaname is able to disappear from sight. They are also able to appear somewhere else as well, flashing quickly while doing so.[1]

Size-Shifting: In the 1971, 1985, and 1996 anime, Akaname's physical size depends on the amount of filth they take in. They can grow as large as a modern building.
