Akashita (赤舌 Akashita, lit. red tongue) is a water yōkai and an antagonist of Kitarō.
Appearance[]
Akashita appears as a giant floating yōkai in the clouds. He has a body covered in hair, no ears, beady eyes, an upturned nose, a large gaping mouth with a red, lolling tongue and fangs, and clawed fingers.
Akashita's original form in the 1996 anime.
Personality[]
When Akashita worked with Hone-Onna, he acted very power-hungry, with the goal of becoming an emperor. In the stories, Yōkai Rally and Yōkai Crisis, he appears as an ally, acting as a fair referee in the former, scolding Backbeard.
In the 1971 anime, Akashita is shown to use his strength in attacking others.
History[]
Manga/Second Anime[]
He appears in the Shonen Sunday story of the same name. In this chapter he is first seen being used by Hone-Onna and Nezumi-Otoko as a hot spring, but is introduced by the former as an emperor of the yōkai, worthy of challenging Kitarō, and has since resurfaced due to a lack of oxygen. He is later seen disguising himself as a "kingdom of happiness" and swallows all of the attendees Nezumi-Otoko gathered, and poops them out later on. He later disguises himself as a hot spring again to lure Kitarō, but the boy escapes just in time, causing Akashita to chase Kitarō and Ittan-Momen. He catches up to them while the two are in the Yōkai Apartments, and swallows the building while the tenants are inside. He later poops the tenants out, the yōkai are powerful enough to float towards Akashita. When Nezumi-Otoko feeds Kitarō's stomach to Akashita, the organ's stomach acid dissovles him until nothing's left but a puddle.

Mizuki's illustration
An Akashita is a yōkai that appeared in Toriyama Sekien's "Gazu Hyakki Yakō". It is drawn as a beast with clawed hands and a hairy face, with most of its body hidden in a black cloud over a floodgate. In its open mouth is a large tongue. Sekien did not attach an explanatory note, so it is not certain whether he intended it as an original creation, but it may be related to the Shakuzetsujin (赤舌神?, lit. "red-tongued god") which guards the western gate of Jupiter. It may also be related to the Shakuzetsunichi (赤舌日?), a day of bad luck in Onmyōdō.
