The 2nd anime adaptation of Akuma-kun was announced in Shigeru Mizuki's 99th birthday festival as one of the four projects on March 7, 2021, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Shigeru Mizuki's birth.[1] The series is set to be released worldwide on Netflix on November 9, 2023.

Story[]

Millennium Research Institute, a counseling office where bizarre requests come in. The head of the research institute, Ichirō Umoregi, also known as "Akuma-kun," a genius boy who only appears once in 10,000 years. However, he doesn't know his real family. So Akuma-kun, along with his partner Mephisto III, pursue the mystery of his origin while challenging mysterious cases in this mysterious detective buddy story.

On March 7, 2021, the Shigeru Mizuki 99th Birthday Festival took place in Sakaiminato, an event organized by Tottori Prefecture to celebrate Shigeru Mizuki's 99th birthday and announce four major projects dedicated to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Shigeru Mizuki's birth. The new series was presented with the release of a poster with the main characters, Shingo Umoregi, Mephisto II, and Ichirō Umoregi, then called Akuma-kun II, and the production team.[1]

On November 27, 2021, during the GeGeGe 2021 event, it was reported that Yūko Mita and Toshio Furukawa would reprise their roles of Shingo and Mephisto II, respectively, the latter was also cast as the voice of Mephisto III. The news was accompanied by a new poster featuring Akuma-kun II, whose name is revealed to be Ichirō Umoregi, and Mephisto III sitting in the ruins of what appears to be the Invisible School.[2]

On March 6, 2022, at the Shigeru Mizuki 100th Anniversary Festival the series was set to premiere globally in 2023, with the announcement of Yūki Kaji as the voice of Ichirō.[3]

On March 7, 2023, it was announced that the series will premiere in the fall of 2023.[4]

On April 29, 2023, four more cast members were announced, consisting of Ryoko Shiraishi (Sanae Kazama; Ichirō's landlord), Yumiri Hanamori (Mio Kazama; Sanae's daughter), Fairouz Ai (Gremory), and Yukiyo Fujii (Hina Asanagi, a college student client).[5]

On July 30, 2023, three more cast members were announced, consisting of Hiro Shimono (Strophaia), Michiyo Yanagisawa (Etsuko Umoregi; Mephisto III's mother), and Yūsaku Yara (Satan), as well as announcing the anime's premiere, November 9.[6]
