Bake-Zōri (化け草履 Bake-Zōri, lit. Monster Zōri) is a sandal Tsukumogami and an adversary of Kitarō's.

Appearance[]

Bake-Zōri's appearance is that of an anthropomorphic zōri sandal, on the side with the straps is a large eye with a blue iris, a mouth with a pink tongue that sticks out and human arms and legs.

Within the 2007 anime, Bake-Zōri's appearance is relatively the same, still being an anthropomorphic straw sandal with human arms and legs. His giant eye has a yellow sclera, a red iris and a black pupil. He has a large mouth, reaching the ends of the laces, having a dull red tongue that he usually sticks out.

In the 2018 anime, Bake-Zōri is a small anthropomorphic zōri sandal, with human arms and legs. His eye has a blue iris and black pupil, while his tongue stick out. He overall appears smooth. In his giant form, his body appears more rough and detailed.

Personality[]

In the manga, Bake-Zōri acts very vindictive and vengeful, but only due to justify the longing and love for the masters of the other footwear he was leading.

In the 1985 anime, he is more well-versed in direct contact with enemies.

In the 1996 anime, he now works with other living objects, not specifically footwear like him. He also employs other non-objects like Nezumi-Otoko to help in their plans.

In the 2007 anime, he is very emotional and sensitive, getting angry, annoyed, and sad very easily. He hated humans for abandoning their footwear so carelessly, and feels betrayed after his expectations for Hakusanbō's show weren't met.

History[]

Manga[]

Bake-Zōri appears in the Shinpen GeGeGe no Kitarō story, Bake-Zōri. In this story, since the restless spirits of him and other abandoned footwear filled the world of footwear, they were unable to be sorted out by other spirits. As a result, he entered a large boot and orchestrated the kidnapping of a young boy that threw out his old pair of shoes. He attacked the Kitarō Family with his army, but was then interrogated, eventually using Kitarō's geta to sort out his army.

1985 Anime[]

Bake-Zōri appears in episode #99 of the third anime adaptation, Footwear Yōkai Bake-Zōri. In this adaptation, the shoes he ordered attacked a young boy named Tadashi, and attacked Tokyo the next day. At night, Bake-Zōri (still in the boot) reappears near an old temple to kidnap Tadashi again, and when his true identity revealed, grew to a large size and attacks Kitarō by himself. After Tadashi apologizes to him, Bake-Zōri forgives him and attends the ballet class of his sister, Haruko, the next day, now back to his normal size.

1996 Anime[]

Bake-Zōri appears in episode #43 of the fourth anime adaptation, Rebellion! Yōkai Bake-Zōri. In this episode, he was born out of one in a pair of sandals a now deceased old man wore, but wasn't buried with. Him and some of the old man's other belongings come to life after being thrown out by Nezumi-Otoko, and hold him hostage. At night, him and the other living objects attack a village for their mistreatment, but are soon confronted by Kitarō and Ittan-Momen, but the former is defeated and the latter retreats. He is then attacked and defeated after Kitarō gets freed by Ittan-Momen, eventually meeting the grandson of the old man that wore him, a young boy named Shinya. He reunites with his owner, making him able to finally cross Heaven.

2007 Anime[]

Bake-Zōri appears in episode #53 of the fifth anime adaptation, Viva Hakusanbō! Haunted House. He is first seen hauling a discarded shoe from a river, and later goes to the Yōkai Yokochō to join Hakusanbō's show for the humans. He is appalled after realizing all of the other performers are actually performing for humans, rather than scaring them, and feels betrayed. After the show is finished, he is unwillingly paired with a young girl who calls him "Zōri-San" in the after-show photo-ops, despite not actually performing. Kitarō eventually shows up to fight him, but his geta convince the boy to not defeat him. Kitarō soon apologizes to him stage on behalf of those who mistreat their footwear, and so Hakusanbō treats this as another part of the performance!

In the next performance, Bake-Zōri and Nezumi-Otoko team up, as the latter also felt betrayed from the previous performance, since Hakusanbō forgot to pay him. He turns giant and attacks the audience, turning all of their footwear alive and evil.

He later appears in GeGeGe no Kitarō: Nippon Bakuretsu!!. Bake-Zōri appears as one of the multitude of Yōkai parading through cities due to Yato-no-Kami's influence, during all of he is in his larger form. He is later returned to where he came from after Hana agrees to follow Yato-no-Kami.[1]

Legend[]

Bake-Zōri is a Tsukumogami, a zōri sandal that comes to life. He is said to spook inhabited households during the night, running around and continuously chanting: "Kararin, kororin, kankororin, managu mittsu ni ha ninmai!" (カラリン、コロリン、カンコロリン、まなぐ三つに歯二ん枚 "Kararin, kororin, kankororin! Two eyes, three eyes and two teeth!"). Most possibly he's mocking his "more noble cousins", the famous Geta.
