Bats (こうもり Kōmori) are an order of mammals that are capable of flight like birds.
Description[]
Bats are small mammals that have large ears and forearms with wings that allow them to fly. Their fur comes in varying dark shades, commonly black or brown.
Behavior[]
Bats are nocturnal animals that form large colonies. When provoked they swarm around their targets, confusing and disorientating them due to the sheer number of them. Some colonies serve or aid Yōkai, such as the Kitarō Family who occasionally calls them when the Bake-Garasu are not available.[1] Vampire Bats (吸血コウモリ Kyūketsu Kōmori) are most prominently shown to obey the commands of Vampires, even being called Servant Bats (しもべコウモリ Shimobe Kōmori) on occasion.
Relation with Yōkai[]
Much like other animals, bats can turn into Yōkai upon certain requirements such as by living long lives or through magical means. One such example is Elite, who turned into a low-class humanoid vampire after consuming enough blood. A ritual can be performed to the same effect, albeit at the cost of sacrifices.
Some bats are able to grow to much larger sizes, such as by adapting to harsher environments. One such example grew so gigantic thanks to the blood pools of Jigoku, gaining s.[2]
In the 2018 anime, several vampires can divide themselves into a colony of vampire bats, Carmilla does this to mess around with her opponents. A few of Pii's vampire minions can do the same, where their bites can transform other humans and Yōkai into vampires.
Though not shown or mentioned in any series proper, bats are the original forms of some Yōkai, such a Nobusuma or Momon-Jii.
Powers and Abilities[]
Flight: Bats are capable of flight by flapping their wings.
Bloodsucking: Some species of bats drink blood as part of their diet. Those serving vampires are a prime example. Some may even be able to gain power by this.
Vampire Conversion: Some colonies created and controlled by vampires are capable of converting others into vampires upon biting them.
