Legend[]

Beelzebub, who is also known as Beelzebul, is a fallen-angel who had turned into a high-ranking demon. He is considered one of the Princes of Hell, where he represents the the sin of gluttony. He is sometimes noted to be one of the first three angels to fall from heaven, the other two being Lucifer and Leviathan.

Before getting adopted in some abrahamic religions as a major demon, Beelzebub was originally a Philistine god that was worshipped in Ekron. The name is associated with Canaanite god Baal, which can refer to a large number of different deities, as it is a western Semitic title meaning Lord or Master. Within Judaism, Ba'al Zebub was a mockery of Baal and those who worshipped him, where some scholars have interpreted that Ba'al Zevuv ("Lord of the Flies") was a way of referring to Baal as a pile of dung and his followers as flies, and a pun on Ba'al Zebul ("Lord of the High Place"). The name Ba'al Zebub was also used to mock the religion of Baal in Rabbincal texts.
