Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist. Among the classical music repertoire, his music ranks amongst the most performed. His works span the transition in classical music from the classical period to the romantic era. His career has conventionally been divided into three periods early, middle, and late. In the early period, he forged his craft, which is typically considered to have lasted until 1802. His middle period, from 1802 to around 1812, showed an individual development from the "classical" styles of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, where sometimes it is characterized as "heroic". He began to suffer increasingly from deafness during this time. In his late period, lasting from 1812 to his death in 1827, he extended his innovations in musical form and expression.
While mentions of Beethoven playing the piano are not as common, there are urban legends with the piano is said to play on its own at night.
