Māo guǐ is a type of Chinese Gu ritual involving a dead cat, and is widely considered to be the most evil of all the rituals. The practitioner uses the cat's ghost to target and curse someone and steal their property, causing the practitioner to become wealthy in return. When the Māo guǐ possesses someone, it eats their internal organs, causing intense physical and mental pain, culminating in the possessed vomiting their blood and dying.

Māo guǐ was very popular during the Sui Dynasty, and there was even a man named Dúgū tuó who used a Māo guǐ to curse the empress. This practice is generally similar to the Japanese Shikigami and Tsukimono.
