Legend[]
Chochin-Kozō is a red-faced boy yōkai carrying a lantern. It's theorized that Chochin-Kozō's face is red due to the reflection of the light from the lantern.
A long time ago, a samurai was walking through the town of Sendai with his servant, lighting his way with a lantern. Soon rain began to fall, and as he tried to hurry, a young boy came up to him. The samurai watched as the boy quickly passed him, thinking that he was going to continue on, but the boy stopped and waited for the samurai. And after the samurai passed him again, the boy again walked on before waiting for the samurai to pass him once more. This continued on for a while before the samurai hurried up to the boy and saw that his face was bright red.
