While the Chinese Tengu resembles the traditional Tengu of Japan or the Hindu deity Garuda, appearing as a humanoid being with bird-like features, it may partially be based on the Tiangou, a Chinese dog demon resembling a shooting star, being from China himself. However, from one account from the Shù Yì Jì (述異記, "A Collection of Bizarre Stories"), written in 1791, describes a dog-like tiāngǒu with a sharp beak and an upright posture.
