The Clam Boat (ハマグリ船 Hamaguri-Bune) is a giant clam that serves as a ship to travel across the ocean.[1] It is also known as the Yōkai Submarine (妖怪潜水艦 Yōkai-Sensuikan).[2]
Description[]
The Clam Boat is a giant clam, where the bottom valve has a plot of land. A small Japanese straw house sits in the center, where a tree is planted by the right, a crop field in front, and several bushes around the sides. A steering wheel is situated somewhere in it.[1]
In the 1968 anime, the Clam Boat is a giant clam that has a plot of land in the bottom valve. At the center is a small straw house, with a dark roof and light-colored walls, to the right of it is a thin tree, surrounding the house at the back are several thick bushes and at the front is a crop field.[3]
Within the 1985 anime, the Clam Boat has a gold shell with a lighter interior. The plot of land has a small Japanese straw house, with a smaller straw shed to its left and is surrounded by trees and bushes, in front of the house are two crop fields. Somewhere a steering wheel situated. Additionally, there are several farm animals that are housed here and an adductor muscle connecting the halves together.[4]
In the 1996 anime, the Clam Boat has a white shell. Obake-Hamaguri is alive and contains a small boat and can extend a periscope out of water.[5]
Within the 2018 anime, the Clam Boat has a dark periwinkle shell with a white interior. The plot of land is grassy and has a small Japanese straw house, with trees and large bushes beside and behind it, in front is a crop field with vegetables growing and a stone platform with a steering wheel attached to it.[6]

The Clam Boat is used by Kitarō to search for the source of the Yōka, where Kawauso steers it. After traveling to several islands, they stop at one where the war took place long ago where the source of the Yōka come from. They then lay Hanako's father to rest and depart on the Clam Boat.[1]
1985 Anime[]
The Clam Boat is used by the Kitarō Family to find the source of the Yōka that sprouted in Hanako's house.
1996 Anime[]
The Clam Boat is used by the Kitarō to find the source of the Yōka that sprouted in Hanako's house. Later, it again appeared against Funa-Yūreis' water-pouring.
2018 Anime[]
The Clam Boat is used by the Kitarō Family to find the source of the Yōka that reside at Toshiko Sawada's house, with Kawauso as the helmsman. They travel from island to island taking several days, eventually passing the equator finding the source on an island of New Guinea. After discovering source and resolving the Tubuan curse on the island, Kitarō, and the others use the Clam Boat to return to Japan.[6]
The Clam Boat is used by the Kitarō Family to find the source of the aging cream that Nezumi-Otoko had received from the Nuppeppō.
Features[]
Transparent Shell: In the 2018 anime, the Clam Boat is able to make its top shell transparent, allowing light to pass through and those within it to see the outside, even when underwater.[6]
