Dai-Kaima (大海魔 Daikaima, lit. Great Sea Demon) is an akuma and a minion of Satan. Within the live-action drama of Akuma-kun, it was called Plato (パイドン Paidon) or Dai-Kaima Plato (大海魔パイドン Daikaima Paidon, lit. Great Sea Demon Plato).

Appearance[]

Dai-Kaima is an enormous creature, where his body is made entirely of blue-green seaweed. His face resembles a mask, having sharp, dark green protrusions on the side, a flat white nose, curvy lips bearing sharp teeth and brown coloration around his eyes, which are oval-shaped and lack any pupils.

In Akuma-kun, it was 50 meters in height and was 45,000 tons in weight.

Personality[]

In Akuma-kun, it protects ocean hence attacked and drowned humans who polluted his habitat. When it attacked vessels, it initially threatened crews to hand over a hishaku, and enlarged the tools and poured large amounts of waters on vessels.

History[]

Shinigami Tai-Senki[]

It fed on soul of the Island of Death and also attacked Japanese fisherman on a boat.

It was later lured by gasoline it favored and swallowed Kitarō, but Kitarō ignited within Dai-Kaima's body with gas and exploded it.

Akuma-kun[]

It appeared as the antagonist in the episode 4.

It targeted the humanity to avenge for environmental degradations and repeatedly sunk vessels.

Powers and Abilities[]

Gas Breath: Dai-Kaima breathed deadly toxic gas from its mouth. This attack also dissolved anyone nearby.

Black Mist: In Akuma-kun, it is capable of breathing black mists and darken the surroundings.

Size-shifting: In Akuma-kun, it is capable of changing sizes of itself and objects. Using this ability, it sunk a number of vessels with enlarged hishaku.

Transformation: In Akuma-kun, it can transform into various forms such as a gigantic goosefish, a Witch, and a priestess to disguise targets.

Hypnosis: In Akuma-kun, it can cast powerful hypnosis to control targets.

Seawater Philosophy: In Akuma-kun, its body consists of seawater, making it weak against freshwater and sunlight which can dissolve its body.

Legend[]

His behaviors within Akuma-kun to sink vessels with a hishaku are akin to the traditional lore of Umibōzu and Funa-Yūrei in Japan.

Trivia[]

  • Its name had alternatively been spelled as Phaedo.
  • A poster of Dai-Kaima, alongside other antagonists from the 1966 Akuma-Kun series, appears in posters from an in-universe film studio in episode #2 of Toei's live-action adaptation of Ninja Hattori Kun.
  • The design of the island on which Dai-Kaima resided could have been inspired by Die Toteninsel ("The island of Death") by Arnold Böcklin in 1880. The design was reused for the Island of Death in After GeGeGe no Kitarō.[1]
