Legend[]

Fuguruma-Yōbi is a tsukumogami depicted in the Gazu Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro born from a fuguruma, a box cart used for transporting books to and from the Imperial Court.

An essay from Tsurezuregusa states that "No matter how many there are, the books on a fuguruma don't feel unsightly", meaning that while one should be cautious with how many material goods they own, there is no such thing as too many books. This yōkai comes from the concept that when there are too many books left abandoned for far too long, spirits will become attracted to them and transform them into yōkai. During the Heian period, female authors were particularly active and wrote many love stories about women's grudges, so a fuguruma filled with such stories would become a female yōkai.

Fuguruma-Yōbi is also said to be born from discarded love letters, as they come from the fullness of one's heart to another, so when disposed of carelessly, they may transform into a yōkai.

In one story from the Shokoku Hyakumonogatari, a monk named Ikkyu warded off a Fuguruma-Yōbi created when a boy discarded the love letters sent to him.

In another story from the Niigata Prefecture, a violent but good-looking boy named Gedōmaru was sent by his parents to the Kokujoji Temple to calm his temper, there he was loved by many girls because of his beauty. When Gedōmaru tried to burn all the love letters he had received, a cloud of smoke filled the room and he fainted on the spot. When Gedōmaru came to, he found that he had been turned into an oni. Gedōmaru would then go on to become the fierce Shuten-Dōji.
