Legends[]
The Fuku-no-Kami is a deity whose presence brings good fortune to the homes they inhabit.
In a story from the Iwate Prefecture, two men were staying at an inn discussing that their wives were about to give birth and promised each other that if one of their wives gave birth to a boy and the other gave birth to a girl, they would have them become husband and wife. Sure enough, when they returned home, they found that one had given birth to a boy and the other had given birth to a girl. Their children would grow up and marry each other just as promised, with their home prospering due to the woman's good fortune.
But the man didn't like this and wondered what he could do to improve the house when an old man approached him and advised him to go early in the morning and shoot an arrow at the roof of the warehouse. The arrow is made out of mugwort, and the bow is made from a deutzia plant.
So the man prepared his bow and arrow, got up early in the morning, and looked up at the warehouse, finding an old man sitting on the rooftop and shot at him. When the woman came by the warehouse, the old man revealed himself as a Fuku-no-Kami and that he would now leave the house because he'd been shot. Soon after, the house fell into ruins and the woman also left the house.
Trivia[]
