Ghosts (幽霊 Yūrei, 死人 Shinin or Shibito) are spirits of the dead, normally humans and animals, and have many subcategories.

In Japan, Yūrei refer to spirits who either do not or can not ascend to the other worlds after their death. Often times, ghosts are accompanied with several Hitodama. There are a variety of subtypes, ranging from dead spirits (死霊 Shiryō), ruined or departed spirits (亡霊 Bōrei), vengeful spirits (怨霊 Onryō) and evil spirits (悪霊 Akuryō).
