Powers and Abilities[]
The Hōkō is a powerful yokai, in the fourth anime he was able to defeat Kitaro and also Konaki-Jijii with minimal effort. Although this not because he is omnipotent, but rather because he is a careful fighter as he was susceptible to Sunakake-Babaa's sorcery.
Fission: Hōkō is able to split into four separate entities after dying, each similar in appearance to the original with traits of the element they embody and being able to manipulate their respective element. However, they are not immune to each other's powers, being capable of mutually destroying their opposing element if they were to clash.
Legend[]
Hōkō is the Japanese equivalent of the Chinese tree spirit Penghou. It inhabits 1000-year-old trees and resembles a tailless black dog with a human face.
In a story recited from the Soushenji, During Sun Quan's reign of the Wu Kingdom, Lu Jingshu, governor of Jian'an County at the time, had a large camphor tree cut down. Blood began to flow when the axe struck it, and when the tree fell, a dead Penghou emerged from inside. The Penghou was then boiled and eaten, tasting like dog meat.
