Hata-Onryō (畑怨霊 Hataonryō, lit. "Vengeful Spirit of the Crop Field") is a yōkai originating in human souls to die in hunger and without being held a memorial service.
Appearance[]

Hata-Onryō's appearance in the 1985 anime adaptation.
While they have bodies in third and fifth anime adaptations, their incarnations in other anime adaptations apparently lack their bodies.
His face greatly resembles traditional masks of tengu with some features of onis added.
In the fourth anime, Hata-Onryō has flame-like shaped organs akin to tongues. These can be used in a manner similar to tentacles.

Legend[]

Illustration of Hata-Onryō by Shigeru Mizuki.
Hata-Onryō are the spirits of those who died of starvation due to a bad harvest and weren't given a proper funeral. These spirits appear haunting fields.
Hata-Onryō's creation has been debated among yōkai researchers, as no ancient folklore depicted this yōkai. It's been assumed that Shigeru Mizuki invented this yōkai, but there's a lack of evidence to this claim. Hata-Onryō's earliest recorded appearance in modern media was in the November 1966 issue of the Bessatsu Shoujo Friend (別冊少女フレンド) magazine published by Morihiro Saitō, in which it was depicted as a leafy figure carrying its own head.[2]
