GeGeGe no Kitarō Wiki

Hata-Onryō (畑怨霊 (はたおんりょう) Hataonryō, lit. "Vengeful Spirit of the Crop Field") is a type of yōkai originating in human souls to die in hunger and without being held a memorial service. According to Medama-Oyaji in the 2007 anime adaptation, there may have been multiple Hata-Onryō incarnations as the eyeball yōkai noted the current incarnation is by far the largest in size he has ever seen.

While they have bodies in third and fifth anime adaptations, their incarnations in other anime adaptations apparently lack their bodies. His face greatly resembles traditional masks of tengu with some features of onis added.

In the 1996 anime, Hata-Onryō has flame-like shaped organs akin to tongues. These can be used in a manner similar to tentacles.

Personality[]

In the 1985 anime, Hata-Onryō is a wicked yōkai, forcing the Azuki Yōkai to attack humans while pretending to be a god. He is shown to speak in a loud, booming voice

In the 1996 anime, while Hata-Onryō still speaks in a loud, booming voice, he is now shown to be a friendly yōkai and ally of Kitarō. While he was first seen scaring some humans, this was only because he was working at Nezumi-Otoko's haunted house, and also because the two seemed to disrespect his kind. Afterwards, he happily agrees to help Taro's Father make his son laugh. He also has a fondness for sport events in the GeGeGe Forest, like the ones in episode #40, Graveyard Night is for the Sports Festival!, and the film, GeGeGe no Kitarō: Obake Nighter.

History[]

1985 Anime[]

He appears in episode #75 of the third anime adaptation, Yōkai Azuki Allied Force. The Hata-Onryō manipulated the Azuki Allied Force as their god and told them to steal a large amount of Azuki beans, but when his plan failed, he reveals his true identity and attempts to eat the three. However he was defeated after the Kitarō Family fought him and climbed his body and then surrendered.

1996 Anime[]

2007 Anime[]

Hata-Onryō appeared in Episode 90 of the fifth anime adaptation, New Year's Great Rampage! Kitarō-Kasha as the main antagonist and the real thief of the humans' stolen mochi for New Year

2018 Anime[]

Hata-Onryō appeared in episode 48 of the sixth anime adaptation where he informed Kitaro that the residents of GeGeGe Forest are rebelling against the humans for revenge.

He also appeared in episode 97 where he, Waira and a couple of Amikiri are fighting the humans during a war[1]

Hata-Onryō are the spirits of those who died of starvation due to a bad harvest and weren't given a proper funeral. These spirits appear haunting fields.

Hata-Onryō's creation has been debated among yōkai researchers, as no ancient folklore depicted this yōkai. It's been assumed that Shigeru Mizuki invented this yōkai, but there's a lack of evidence to this claim. Hata-Onryō's earliest recorded appearance in modern media was in the November 1966 issue of the Bessatsu Shoujo Friend (別冊少女フレンド) magazine published by Morihiro Saitō, in which it was depicted as a leafy figure carrying its own head.[2]
