Legend[]
Hitotsume-Nyūdō is a giant one-eyed monk yōkai from Japan. Their true identity is sometimes said to be a shapeshifting animal, such as a tanuki or kitsune.
Once, a poor doctor who lived in Shiba Takanawa, Edo was visited by a group of warriors who requested that he take care of an ill family member inside a palanquin. The doctor accepted and was taken into the palanquin blindfolded. A few moments later, a tea master brought him a cup of tea and some cigarettes. Removing his blindfold, the doctor found that he was a Hitotsume-Nyūdō. The doctor trembled with fear when a fairy entered the room and motioned the doctor to follow it into another room. There, delicacies from the mountains and the sea were lined up with heavenly music playing, and a banquet being prepared. The fairy offered the doctor some sake, and he got very drunk, eventually waking up at home. The doctor first thought that it was a dream, but his worried wife informed him that she saw a red and blue demon carrying him home drunk in a palanquin this morning.
