Hyōsube (ひょうすべ Hyōsube) is a hairy yōkai.

Manga/1968 Anime[]

Hyōsube first appears in Sara-Kozō as one of the yōkai who helps Sara-Kozō abduct the members of the Poor Boys. He later appears as one of the witnesses of The Great Yōkai Trial and afterwards helps carry Momon-Jii's palanquin.

1985 Anime[]

Hyōsube appears in episode 6 Hell Journey! Ghost Train!! in a train station corridor where tries to intimidate the Salarymen Kurokawa and Yoshinaga but with no avail as it get smacked in the head.

2007 Anime[]

In the fifth anime he takes part in Yōkai Sports Meet, as one of the many participants of the sports festival, representing the Southern Japan team.[1] Later he is one of the chosen 47 Yōkai Warriors and the representative of Saga.

He later appears in GeGeGe no Kitarō: Nippon Bakuretsu!!. Hyōsube appears as one of the multitude of Yōkai parading through cities due to Yato-no-Kami's influence. He is later returned to where he came from after Hana agrees to follow Yato-no-Kami. Later, during the battle against Yato-no-Kami, Yobuko calls for help from all over Japan, the remaining 47 Yōkai Warriors are revealed once their mark begins to shine. Among those are Hyōsube, who sees his mark appearing on his upper right arm. Afterwards his power is sent to aid Kitarō in defeating Yato-no-Kami.

Due to the fifth anime adaptation's sudden cancellation at 100 episodes, he is among the 23 Yōkai Warriors that were not revealed aside from the movie.[2].

2018 Anime[]

He is among the yōkai who witnesses Agnès' return to the forest, joining in the pelting of threats and rocks at young witch. They stop once Neko-Musume stands by Agnès and walks with her, followed by the other Kitarō Family members. He soon joins the crowd of yōkai gathered around the GeGeGe House, trying to drive Agnès out of the forest. Medama-Oyaji tries to warn them that if they drive her out then the tragedy of the Malay yōkai will repeat somewhere else. Hyosube counters him by saying that Backbeard wants to make a country of yōkai and that it does not sound as bad. He listens to Kitarō as he explains how grave the consequences are if Japan becomes a part of Backbeard's empire, causing the crowd to look at one another. Until their attention is drawn to Kitarō as he stands on his resolve to fight.[3]

Hyōsube are hairy humanoids and are more savage and hostile than their cousins of the Kappa. The “hyo- hyo-” call that they make is said to be where their name comes from. They generally keep away from humans, preferring to live near rivers where they enjoy catching fish. Their favorite food is the eggplant, being capable of eating entire patches quickly. They share many things with their cousins the kappa, having a love of mischief and a hatred of horses and retain a strong sense of honor despite their love of mischief.
