Ido-Sennin (井戸仙人, Well hermit) is a yōkai who lives in a well in the GeGeGe Forest and a friend and ally of Kitarō. He first appears in the Shonen Magazine story Yōkai Cloth.
Appearance
Ido-Sennin has a large, deformed head, with large, sunken eye sockets housing two beady eyes. His left eye socket is normally depicted as larger than his right. He has long, stringy hair, no nose, and his lips are thin and wrinkly with sharp teeth. His skin typically appears to be covered in mold, usually with spot all over his face. His body resembles a normal human body clad in a robe. He usually carries a large walking stick with him.
Personality
Ido-Sennin can be very snarky and straight to the point. Because becoming a yōkai while in Japan has allowed him immortality, he feels indebted to Japan and will eagerly help out if the country is in danger.
About
Ido-Sennin was once a human from China. A several thousand years ago, he journeyed to Japan and began to live in a well. He lived by breathing in the methane gas in the well, and over time he evolved into a yōkai. He has a vast knowledge of Eurasian yōkai and magic and is proficient in the ways Yōkai medicine and tonics. He also possesses a crystal ball called the All Purpose Glass Ball, which can reveal the identities of unknown culprits.
History
2nd Anime
He only appears sparsely in the 2nd anime.
3rd Anime
Starting from the third anime, he frequently helps the Kitarō Family.
He appears in the third movie based on the third anime adaption, GeGeGe no Kitarō: Saikyō Yōkai Gundan! Nippon Jōriku!!
4th Anime
Like in the third anime adaption, he helps the Kitarō Family rather frequently.
5th Anime
In the 5th anime, Ido-Sennin's well is located in Yōkai Yokochō, and he often appears to help resolve incidents that require the mystical substances and medicines he can create. In this adaptation he is depicted as fairly snarky and does not get along too well with Medama-Oyaji.
