The Juratan (ジュラタン Juratan) are a race of prehistoric yōkai that appear in the Akuma-kun franchise.

Description[]

The Juratan are roughly piscine humanoids, having green scales, spikes protruding around their shoulders, short segmented necks, smooth, yet muscular bellies, and short tails. They have a set of large fins around their head in place of ears, their mouths are small and pointed, and webbed, clawed digits.

In the drama, the Juratan have shiny, scaly skin, webbed, clawed limbs, faces with prominent brow and cheek wrinkles and spikes, large, black eyes, large fins in place of ears, and small, pointed mouths, short, segmented necks, smooth but muscular bellies, and short tails. The king Juratan has larger face spikes and additional head fins. He also wears a necklace. Production stills reveal that the Juratan's skin is a greenish-silver, while their eyes are red.[1]

In the 1989 anime, the Juratan roughly appear the same, but now have spiky fins on their backs. They're colored a more saturated and darker green, with blue beaks, light green bellies, red eyes, and yellow brow spikes.[2]

Behavior[]

In the drama, the Juratan are a hostile yet advanced race. Juratan appear in groups, and are smart enough to speak, send telepathic messages to alert others of something, and form human-like societies and hierarchies before they even existed. Juratan can also use their strength in not just attacking, but also making large, European-style castles to live in. Despite this, they are extremely hostile towards human, immediately attacking and freezing them.[1]

In the anime, Juratan seemingly act as the servants of Zeorum.[2]

The Juratan speak in an echoey, high-pitched voice, meanwhile their king speaks in a lower pitch. When attacking, they often just growl.

History[]

Akuma-kun (1966)[]

Juratan appeared in episode #21 of the series, Fossil Man. They were a race of prehistoric creatures that lived during the 3rd Ice Age.

In the present, a man named Mizuno, who was asked by Dr. Fujinami to investigate an unusual cold wave in the Japanese Alps, was attacked by a Juratan. The creature later followed Mizuno to his headquarters, and attacked him and everyone else there. After the attack, the Juratan followed Shingo Yamada and his friends after a stone that was in the luggage section of the bus the boys were in sent a telepathic message.

At night, the Juratan flew to Tokyo and pursued Shingo and his friends as they were driven to Fujinami Laboratory with a police car, freezing the surrounding people and attempting to do the same to the boys. It was later driven off by a match lit up by one of the policemen used from the flames of the crashed car. When Shingo went off to summon Mephisto's younger brother, the Juratan followed him and froze Jōhōya and Hinta. After freezing Shingo and Mephisto's staff and feet, the Juratan was burnt to death after the elderly akuma reversed its effects. Before dying and turning into stone, the Juratan sent another telepathic message to his kin.

After being unfrozen, Shingo and the others went to Fujinami Laboratory to analyze the fossilized stone that was in the bus. When the lab was under a power outage, the group of Juratan follow Shingo their and freeze Mephisto while chasing Jōhōya and Hinta, but are driven away by steam. After some time, the fossilized stone thaws out and turns into the king Juratan, attacking Dr. Fujinami and kidnapping his daughter Kumi offscreen.

After learning of their location though Mephisto's magic ball, Shingo and Mephisto go to a snowy castle the Juratan are in, and use Mephisto's magic stick to knock out the yōkai. While they are able to rescue Kumi, Mephisto and Shingo are frozen by the king Juratan, however they're able to escape again. The Juratan "go extinct" for good after Mephisto summons explosions as strong as a volcano's eruption to destroy their castle.[1]

Akuma-kun (1989)[]

Juratan appeared in episode #41 of the anime, Charge into the Demonic Space! Hurry, the Invisible School. They appeared to attack the Twelve Apostles while they entered Demonic Space, but stopped after Kajū and Yurugu defeated them. They notably crumbled like statues while being defeated.[2]

  • The suit of the Juratan in the TV drama are repurposed and modified from those of the Cyborg Mermen from the film, Terror Beneath the Sea. The mermen were notably designed by famous tokusatsu artist Tohl Narita (under a pseudonym). Another one of the suits would be repurposed into Jaian's for the series Captain Ultra.
  • While Akuma-Kun was airing, one of the Juratan's suit was temporarily displayed on the back of a statue of the original kaijū Giran, which was built in Korakuen amusement park, now Tokyo Dome City Attractions, to coincide with the First Kaiju Boom.
  • In episode #4 of Toei's live-action adaptation of Ninja Hattori-Kun, one of the Juratan duels against Morgon in an in-universe stage show.
