Just like in Buddhist teachings, in the 1985 anime Jizō is a protector of children and helps them while they're stuck in Jigoku.

1985 Anime[]
Jizō appeared in episode #110 of the third anime adaptation, and the second episode of the Jigoku Arc, Blood Battle on the Sanzu River. In this episode, he appears and disintegrates Datsui-Babaa, taking the lost children of the Sanzu River to Heaven. He tells Kitarō something is wrong in Jigoku and that he can't properly communicate with Enma-Daiō. He gives him the special Pigeon of Fortune and floats back up in the sky
2007 Anime[]

In the 89th episode Miracle of Shiwasu! Kitarō is Very Busy!!, Ido-Sennin animated a statue of Jizō which gained its own consciousness either temporarily or permanently.
