Kamanari (釜鳴り Kamanari, lit. Ringing Kettle) is a flying yokai.

Appearance[]

In the manga, Kamanari is a yōkai with a elongated, furry body and wispy tail, with only one eye and a pair of four-fingered hands.

In the 1971 anime, Kamanari's body is more chunky and less furry, and his hands are smaller, and has purple fur.

In the 1996 anime, Kamanari's body is translucent and is dark purple. He has a single eye which has a dark purple pupils and white sclerae. He has a pair of arms with five digits, a patch of dark purple short hair that blends with his skin and a wispy tail.[1]

Within the 2007 anime, Kamanari is small purple spirit-like Yōkai, having an eye with a red pupil. He has a pair of arms that are swollen near the hands and purple short stubby hair on top of his head that blends with his skin and a wispy tail.[2]

Personality[]

In the 1971 anime, while Kamanari's motives are unclear, he is a malevolent trickster yōkai who kidnaps multiple children. He also laughs as he bounces away from Kitarō.

History[]

Manga / 1971 Anime[]

He appears in episode #19 of the second anime adaptation, Kamanari.[3]

Kamanari was a Tsukumogami of an old kettle which became a yōkai as it gained spiritual energy from Kitarō's hairs, hence its medium was Kitarō's hairs.

1985 Anime[]

He appears in episode #36 of the third anime adaptation, Multi-Dimensional Yōkai Kamanari..[4]

1996 Anime[]

He appears in episode #95 of the fourth anime adaptation, Yōkai Energy Thief: Kamanari!.[1]

2007 Anime[]

He appears in episode #22 of the fifth anime adaptation, Fake Kitaro Appears!!.[2]

The Great Yōkai War[]

Kamanari, alongside thousands of other yōkai, attend the Festival of Darkness near Yasunori Katō's base in Tokyo, which ends up inadvertently trashing some of his Kikai. He is first seen specifically to the left of Ubume, holding a paper lantern. He later greets Shōjō when he's riding on Ittan-Momen.

The Great Yōkai War: Guardians[]

Kamanari was an attendant of the Yōkai Yammit, an international gathering of yōkai in Beijing. He sat in the middle of Kago-Otoko and Kamikiri.

He later appears in the army Nurarihyon gathered to fight the Yōkaijū. They are first seen with a Tateyama-Gaeru on their left.

Powers and Abilities[]

Agility: In the 1971 anime, Kamanari is shown to hop fast while in his kama and fly faster than Ittan-Momen.

Durability: In The Great Yōkai War, Kamanari, alongside all the other yōkai in the Festival of Darkness, survive a large explosion caused by Yasunori Katō's defeat.

Legend[]

Kamanari is an alternate name for the Narigama, a Tsukumogami born from an iron kettle.

Trivia[]

  • In August 16, 2015, to celebrate the ten year anniversary of The Great Yōkai War, a screening of the film was held at the Tenshin Memorial Museum of Art, Ibaraki. There was also an exhibit showcasing some of the masks from the film, and one of them was Kamanari's.[5]
