In his books, Shigeru Mizuki specially described about the legend of Beowulf and Fáfnir on the contrary to his illustration depicting an Asian dragon.[2] Mizuki separately drew the illustration of Yōchū based on Fáfnir.[3]

Mizuki also mentioned about various legends of fire-breathing dragons and worms across the world with different aliases of Karyū from Europe to India and South Asia, such as Fire Dragon (ファイヤー・ドラゴン), Fire Drake (ファイヤー・ドレイク), Drago Volance (ドラコ・ヴォランス), Burning Drake (バーニング・ドレイク), Drigvesha (ドリグヴェシャ), and Bedado Etam (ベダド・エタム).

Mizuki also refereed various notable dragons such as Rahab, Jörmungandr, the Beast of Revelation, and other dragons and serpents from several mythologies among Greece, Germany, and Babylonia.
