Legend[]
The Kinjirō Ninomiya statue is based on the real-life statues of Sontoku Ninomiya (born Kinjirō Ninomiya) placed around school grounds, which is said to come to life at night, just like the anatomical model. It is common to find statues of him in or in front of Japanese schools, elementary schools in particular. These statues typically portray him as a boy reading a book, walking while carrying firewood on his back. This depicts the popular stories of him studying and reading everytime he could.
Sontoku Ninomiya was born in Kayama, Ashigarakami-gun, Sagami province to a poor family and was named Kinjiro. He lived with his uncle after his father and mother died when he was 14 and 16, respectively. He studied on his own while working on his uncle's land. On his own, he later obtained an abandoned land, transforming it into an agricultural land, and eventually restoring his household by the age of 20. While in his 20s, he achieved considerable wealth as a landlord. He was recruited to run a small feudal district, which was facing financial difficulties. He then revived the local enconomy, especially through agricultural development. He was eventually recruited to run Odawara Domain and later Sagami Province by the daimyō, who heard of his achievements. When a famine struck Odawara, because his fellow bureaucrats opposed his proposal to open up the public granaries to feed the populace, who told him that permission had to be granted by the shōgun for commoners to access the rice stores. In response, he stated no one could eat public rice before getting the shōgun's approval, which his fellow bureaucrats quickly changed their minds and people should be fed immediately, since it was an emergency. He was later entrusted with one of the shogunate's states. His philosophy and methodology became a standard format in economic management and feudal land development. He was given the name "Sontoku" was given to him for his accomplishments. After his death, he was awarded with Juji'i (従四位), which was the Lower Fourth Honor under the ritsuryō rank system, by the emperor.
