Shigeru Mizuki introduced the Kinka no Neko or Jīnhuá Māo as a cat yōkai from Jinhua, Zhejiang Province. Cats who are kept in homes here turn into this yōkai after three years. When the transformation is complete, the Kinka no Neko sneaks out of the house and climbs its roof to absorb the "essence of the moon". Afterwards, the Kinka no Neko goes to a deep, secluded mountain valley or a Buddhist temple and makes a hole, hiding in that hole for as long as it makes its home there, and when the sun goes down it goes out and becomes active again.

Kinka no Neko have the ability to transform into handsome men and women, and whenever they're asked out by a man or lady, they use their abilities to deceive them, and secretly urinate inside water buckets inside their house. Anyone who drinks this water without knowing it will lose any chance of recognizing the men as a Kinka no Neko, become increasingly weak, and eventually end up in bed, unable to get up. If someone else is able to suspect that the cause of the illness may be a Kinka no Neko, they'll cover the sick person in a blue robe and stay up all night observing their movements until dawn, and if cat hair is found on the robe, they will come to the conclusion that this yōkai is responsible. Afterwards, the person will secretly hire a hunter to come to the house with several hunting dogs and release them all at once, without the Kinka no Neko noticing. This is because it is said that only hunting dogs can catch a Kinka no Neko when disguised, and if the yōkai is successfully coat, it can be skinned and its the meat can be roasted, the meat of a male Kinko no Neko being served to his female victim and the meat of a female Kinka no Neko being served to her male victim. However, if the Kinka no Neko and the victim it infects are of the same gender, then the illness will have will eventually kill the victim without any form of cure.
