Legend[]
During Hōjō Tokimasa’s rule, he was menaced by a small oni-like yokai known as Shōki who would continuously attack him every night to the point that no prayers would repel it. Then one night, the spirit of an old man appeared in a dream, telling Tokimasa that he is the spirit of his sword and that he must cleanse his sword to ward off Shōki for good.
After getting the sword cleansed, the next day when the page brought a brazier to Tokimasa, the sword fell on top of it, cutting off a leg of the brazier. Tokimasa thought there must be some reason for this, so he cast the image of Shōki on the foot of the brazier stand and waited. When Shōki appeared that night, the sword sprang on its own and struck him down with a single blow. Shōki never appeared again after that.
