Legend[]
Illustration of Kowai by Shigeru Mizuki.
Kowai are gluttonous and avaricious yōkai described in the Ehon Hyakumonogatari who are the spirits of those who were unable to pass on due to their obsession with their hunger. Their ravenous appetite leads them to devour anything in sight, even corpses. The same book (ca. 1841) suggests that the name for this yōkai is the origin of the word Kowai (怖い), the Japanese word for "scary". However, the earliest known use of this word to mean "scary" emerged around the late Muromachi period (ca. 1573).
