Kuchisake-Onna (口裂け女 Kuchisake-Onna, lit. Slit-Mouthed Woman) is a female yōkai.

Appearance[]

The Kuchisake-Onna resembles a woman with a huge fanged grin, having a cloth mask to cover it most of the time. Her eyes are slanted and her hair is light-gray. She wears a pearl necklace, a red shirt with lips designed on it, blue jeans, and yellow shoes.

Her appearance in GeGeGe no Kitarō: Yōkai Yokochō is more simplified with her having brown hair and wearing a red dress & red shoes, but she still has her trademark cloth mask. Her mouth also appears to be more bigger, resembling the glasglow smile of her legend.

Legend[]

The Kuchisake-Onna was said to be originally a human woman who had a failed plastic surgery, now returning as a malevolent spirit. The Kuchisake-Onna approaches people wearing a cloth mask and carrying sharp scissors, asking potential victims if she is pretty. If a person says "No", she'll kill them with her scissors. But if they answer "Yes", she'll reveal her mutilated mouth and ask them "How about now?" If they say yes, she slits their mouth to look like her's. If they say no, she'll slice them in half with her scissors.

The only way to escape the Kuchisake-Onna is to tell her that she's average after her question or drop sweets on the ground. This will confuse/distract the Kuchisake-Onna long enough to give her victim a chance to escape.
