Legend[]

Kyōrinrin is a tsukumogami of a worn-out sutra from the Gazu Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro. It was presumably inspired by an anecdote in the Taiheiki detailing a scripture wielded by a monk named Shubin from the Sai-ji Temple in Kyoto.

There once was a monk named Shinzei Ajari who recited the Lotus Sutra daily. He came to the realization that the longer he stays alive, he may one day commit sin, and thus be stuck in the cycle of reincarnation. Therefore he chose to kill himself by poisoning himself, but no methods worked.

Soon, a plague began to spread, and Ajari and his parents became infected. In Ajari's dream, many Kijin appeared and tried to take him and his parents to the underworld, but one Kijin stopped Ajari, proclaiming that he welded the power of the Lotus Sutra. When he woke up, Ajari was cured of his illness, but his parents had already passed away.

Saddened, Ajari recited the Lotus Sutra with all his heart. Then, in a dream, the sixth volume of the Lotus Sutra flew out of the air and told Ajari that in recognition of his recitation of the Lotus Sutra and your prayer for the resurrection of your parents, they will be sent back to you alive. When Ajari woke up, his parents were revived as they embraced each other and admired the power of the sutra. The sutra was said to be a Kyōrinrin.
