The Mōryō (もうりよう Mōryō) is a yōkai that resides in a village, which at one point possessed the corpse of the mayor's daughter.

Appearance[]

In the manga, the true form of Mōryō is never shown. It possessed a ghostly pale woman with long hair and an angry face.

In the 1971 anime, the Mōryō has less fizzy hair and has fangs. It has light-blue skin, but can also transform to look more like Kiriko. The true form is a muscular giant with green skin, and a face like Gyūki, with white horns and fangs, and eyes with yellow sclera. They wear a red loincloth with yellow stripes. Later on, their eyes turn white.

In the 2007 anime, the Mōryō has spiky, white hair, pale skin, and eyes with red pupils.

Personality[]

Mōryō is consistently portrayed as a hostile evil spirit that often hides her true power by staying comatose.

In the 1971 anime, they often laugh sinisterly after evading attacks from their enemies.

In the 2007 anime, they often wail and shout when things don't go their way.

History[]

Manga[]

1971 Anime[]

The Mōryō appears in the sixth episode of the second anime adaptation, Shibito-Tsuki. In this adaptation, it first appears to Nezumi-Otoko as Kiriko, agreeing to becoming his partner. It later (literally) appeared in its true colors as it fought Kitarō, fighting and evading his attacks for the first two nights, summoning the Mōryō on the second, and only retreating after the morning was about to start. In the third night, since Kiriko's body was moved to a coffin inside the hall of Myo-Ji Temple, it appeared in its true form, but was defeated after sunlight appeared from the gates.

2007 Anime[]

The Mōryō appears in episode #64 of the fifth anime adaptation, The Night of Mōryō.

Powers and Abilities[]

Levitation: In the 1971 anime, the Mōryō is shown to be capable of levitating at semi-high heights.

It'll eat and drink a lot without sleep. However, the body will be rotten day by day, and eventually, body fluids will come out of all the holes of the body.

Trivia[]
