Mammoth Flower (マンモスフラワー Manmosu Furawā) is an ancient plant species that once flourished since before the birth of Yokai and reached its peak flourishing when Yokai was born.

Appearance[]

Mammoth Flowers are titanic plants with wide stems and large heads that have long tendrils ending with wide cuts and small holes. The top of the heads are similar to the end of the tendrils, being messy with wide cuts.

In the 1971 anime, Mammoth Flowers are navy blue and normally have four to five tendrils. At the top of their large heads are small patches of large green leaves and usually one small pink flower, though some have two.

In the 1996 anime, a Mammoth Flower first appears to be red, due to trying to find a proper place to bloom. The tendrils end with yellow cuts and small holes and the tops are likewise similar. When it finds a place to bloom, it turns green and the tendrils furl into the top of the head. When it blooms, the head opens up to a large flower with red petals and yellow stamen. If the seed of a Mammoth Flower is eaten, then it merges with its host, capable of revealing their face on the sides of its head. After blooming, it separates with its host.

Legend[]

The Mammoth Flower may have been inspired by the the Triffids from the 1951 novel, The Day of the Triffids, by the English science fiction author John Wyndham. Where the word "triffid" has become common in British English to describe fictional plants that can grow to a gigantic size, are capable of moving about, and could kill humans.[1]

This may have also inspired similar plant kaiju Juran that appeared in the episode of Mammoth Flower of the Ultra Q series, an ancient plant that was released after a powerful earthquake hit Japan. Where Mizuki's Mammoth Flower made its debut in 1965 while Juran made its first appearance in 1966. The plant kaiju may have also inspired the Legion Plant, a similar giant flower with a symbiotic relationship with the Legion that battled against Gamera.
