Trivia[]
- Shigeru Mizuki's original intention, to make Mary the wife of Kitarō and place the story as the last chapter of the series, shows notable connections with his "what if" life which he once dreamed of; to naturalize into the Tolai People of New Guinea. The beautiful girl called Epupe (エプペ) was one of three members of the Tolai people Mizuki most notably befriended with, and Mizuki had feelings for her although he was very disappointed to know that Epupe was already married when they met.[1][2][3]
- Although Miu from the 2007 anime is an anime-original character, she has notable similarities in backgrounds to Mary; both Mary and Miu loves Kitaro, they are heirs of tribal leaders of tropical islands, their islands are connected to the other world, Kitaro nearly died or actually died and resurrected by the girls in the events, and Amami Tribe is close to humans.
- She has not appeared in the series afterward, however Shigeru Mizuki Memorial Museum officially states Mary as Kitarō's wife.
