The Matsu no Seirei are the spirits inhabiting a pair of old pine trees called Niryū no Matsu in front of the Chokoji Temple. One day, these spirits appeared before the head priest and asked if they could borrow an inkstone and paper. The priest thought that it was a strange request, but not wanting to go against the spirits of a sacred tree, he agreed regardless. The Matsu no Seirei wrote Chinese poems on the piece of paper and gave it to the priest, which the temple used as protection from evil spirits.

Kijimuna are a prominent example of Chinese Banyan spirits in Ryūkyū Mythology.
