The Mermaid Children (人魚の子供 Ningyo no Kodomo), individually referred to as a Mermaid Child (人魚の子 Ningyo no Ko), are young Merfolks living around Tengu-Iwa. Nearly all of them were kidnapped by Sazae-Oni who did so to lure Kitarō to devour him and increase his power.

Sazae-Oni invaded Tengu-Iwa and captured nearly all of the mermaid boys. Sazae-Oni disguised himself as Kitarō, and was selling the mermaid children alive in a human town. This was to spread rumors to lure Kitarō that "Kitarō is selling mermaid children alive", and succeeded to lure Kitarō. As Kitarō came to the town, he found out the truth from the remaining mermaid child who was severely wounded by Sazae-Oni and stranded on a shore and discovered by local human boys but managed to survive. Kitarō headed to Sazae-Oni's hideout with the guide of the mermaid.
