Mujina (ムジナ Mujina) is a mujina, badger Yōkai capable of shapeshifting, and works with Oritatami-Nyūdō.
Appearance[]
In the manga, Mujina disguises himself as a person resembling Nezumi-Otoko, only with a box containing Oritatami-Nyūdō on his back and wearing a dark cloak with circular patterns. While Mujina's true form is not fully revealed, he seems to have a furry body, a long, bushy tail, and a long nose.
In the 1968 anime, Mujina's disguise as Nezumi-Otoko's younger brother is now identical to him. His true form is now fully shown, being a four-legged, furry mammal with dark fur, angry eyes, small, pointy ears, fangs, and a long body and tail.
In the 1985 anime, Mujina notably has paler skin when disguised as Nezumi-Otoko's younger brother. His robe is more closer in design to the manga, with a dark brown color and gray patterns. His true form is more humanoid, with brown fur, squinted eyes with red sclera and blue eyelids, and clawed hands.
History[]
1968 Anime[]
Mujina appears in episode #38 of the first anime adaptation, Oritatami-Nyūdō. In this adaptation, he disguised himself Nezumi-Otoko, and told three young boys to put all their money in the Yōkai Post. He was also implied to have poisoned Kitarō's foot. He later teased the real Nezumi, but later manipulated him into thinking he was his younger brother. He showed Nezumi Oritatami-Nyūdō, and decided to work together to get rid of Kitarō. He enters the GeGeGe House as the real Nezumi-Otoko, but retreated and revealed himself as the hanyō's younger brother.
Together, the Nezumi brothers went to the mountains to revive Oritatami-Nyūdō, and went to Nezumi-Otoko's office. They were pursued by Kitarō, who invertedly made Nezumi-Otoko reveal Mujina's true form. He then roars and runs away.
1985 Anime[]
Mujina appears in episode #13 of the third anime adaptation, Oritatami-Nyūdō. In this adaptation, he sets up his scheme during the New Year, first seen scaring two boys near a temple using Oritatami-Nyūdō. He's later to be revealed as an imposter by Sunakake-Babaa's magic ball. He later meets Kitarō, and gets confronted by the real Nezumi-Otoko. After a quick scuffle, he tells Nezumi he's his younger brother, even giving him their umbilical cord back when they were both conjoined in the womb (in reality a piece of straw). He is taken to Nezumi-Otoko's house, and secretly begins to steal his things as Nezumi heads out to buy him some food. When Kitarō confronts him, Mujina turns into his true form, and runs to the other room to disguise himself as a Jizō statue in a graveyard, but gets found out again. As a last resort, Mujina inflates his testicles in order to flatten Kitarō, but they get popped by the boy's Hair Spear.
Mujina cries out and surrenders, and scares away Neko-Musume and Yumeko Tendō, and later gets bandaged up by Sunakake-Babaa. He tells the heroes that he simply wanted to use the money he would get to feed his three children mochi. Kitarō manages to convince him to disguise himself as Nezumi-Otoko's younger brother again, and when night falls, the two bond over some food. The next day, Mujina says goodbye to Nezumi-Otoko, saying he'll come back once the two of them become financially successful.
1996 Anime[]
Mujina appears in episode #36 of the fourth anime adaptation, Astounded! Oritatami-Nyūdō. In this adaptation, he uses Oritatami-Nyūdō to scare an elderly couple in the mountains while disguised as Nezumi-Otoko, and later steals the money of three boys offscreen. He is first fully shown selling in the Akimatsuri Festival, before being attacked by Nezumi-Otoko, who stops after he says he's his younger brother. He is later introduced to the Yōkai Apartments, greeting Abura-Sumashi and Yobuko with his older brother. After a series of disappearances, Sunakake-Babaa confronts him, though Nezumi denies him any foul play. Mujina later gets pursued by Kitarō, saying to Nezumi-Otoko that they'll stick together from now on. After Oritatami-Nyūdō is defeated, Nezumi invertedly reveals Mujina's true form, and beats him up. The next day, Mujina apologies to Kitarō and leaves.
2018 Anime[]

Powers and Abilities[]
Shapeshifting: Mujina is able to change his appearance, making himself resemble others.
- Nue Form: Mujina along with a thrush, took the form of a large shadowed beast with green eyes to act as Nue, serving as a distraction for him. His roar can cause those awake to become ill with gray marks across their body.[1]
Illusion: In the 1985 anime, Mujina is capable of making illusions, specifically that of a windy graveyard
Testicles: In the 1985 anime, Mujina is capable of inflating his testicles, saying it's his "Secret Technique".
Legend[]
The Mujina is an old Japanese term that now primarily refers to the Japanese badger, but was used for the Japanese raccoon dog, also known as the Tanuki in the past, causing confusion. In some regions, the term still refers to the Japanese raccoon dog (tanuki) or even foxes (kitsune). The Mujina of Japanese folklore is an avid shapeshifter and deceiver of humans. One of the forms the mujina is purported to take, is that of a "faceless ghost". The faceless ghost is often referred to by English speakers as a mujina, but the Japanese know it as Nopperabō.
Trivia[]
- In the 1968 anime, Mujina's roars are reused from Anguirus of the Godzilla series.
- Wataru Takagi voiced Mujina and he transformed into Nezumi-Otoko's fake brother in the fourth anime. Decades later, he voiced Nezumi-Otoko
