Neneko is the name of an infamous female Kappa known from Ibaraki Prefecture. She is one of the most well-known kappa in Japan.
Inhabiting the Tone River, she caused all sorts of mischief including stealing fish from ponds, dragging horses tied up in their stables into the water, dragging children in the river, and destroying cucumber fields.
But one summer evening, when a samurai was pulling his beloved horse along the riverbank. Neneko tried to pull the horse into the river, but the horse got startled and started to jump around. At that moment, the samurai found and grabbed Neneko by the neck. Unable to break free from the samurai's grip, Neneko begged for forgiveness and promised she would never cause mischief again. The samurai let her go, and in return, Neneko taught him a secret remedy for cuts.
It is said that there is a shrine dedicated to Neneko in the town of Tone.
