Notsugo is a yōkai whose appearance is said to be unidentifiable. Their true identity is said to be the ghosts of infants who were unable to attain Buddhahood due to being culled or aborted; they are invisible and make the cries of babies.
In the Ehime Prefecture, when one walks alone on a trail at night, a Notsugo will entangle their legs and make them unable to walk, so children were warned not to go out at night, or else a Notsugo would possess them.
In the Uchiumi Village, the Notsugo chased after children who were walking down the street, demanding their sandals, and making their feet so heavy that they were unable to move. Cutting the strap of the sandal will set you free and allow you to escape the Notsugo.
