Powers and Abilities[]

Detachable Head: Nuke-Kubi is able to detach his head by his own will, while separated he is unable to control his body as it becomes immobile. During separation his head is able to float above the ground and even fly at great heights.[1][3] His head can also be removed easily by someone else.[2]

  • Thermal Emission: When separated, his head releases an extreme heat capable of causing the temperature to rise to melting point. Conversely his body gives off an extreme cold that is capable of dropping the temperature to freezing point. When connected they cancel each other and maintain a normal temperature. However if separated for longer periods of time, his head will grow bigger and hotter until eventually he will explode.[2][3]

Legend[]

Nuke-Kubi are a variant of Rokuro-Kubi, where they are people cursed to transform into a Yōkai. They are usually depicted as women in artwork, but there have been male Nuke-Kubi. In this case, rather than having their necks stretch, their heads detach from their bodies. Because they lack their necks, they can move much farther than a Rokuro-Kubi. They are known to be more violent that their counterpart, brutally attacking humans and animals to death, they also have a thirst for blood that makes them suck the blood of their victims. There are several cures from different legends, in one from Hitachi a woman is fed the liver of a white dog, but the curse is transferred to her daughter whose head attacked white dogs to death. In other accounts, by moving the body to a safe place during the night, the head will eventually die.
