Illustration of Okkeruipe
Okkeruipe, also known as Okkeoyashi, which mean "farting man" is a type of spirit from Ainu folklore.
If a person is alone in the house and hears a "poa" sound in the hearth, the sound is bound to spread everywhere and smell bad. If the person makes a "poa" sound back, the smell will go away. In one legend, a young Ainu man was sailing down a river in a boat, when another young man asked for a ride. When the man gave him a ride, it turned out to be Okkeruipe, sang a song and farted on the boat, causing the boat to rip.
While Okkeruipe is desribed as resembling a black fox in legend, Shigeru Mizuki depicts it as a ghostly man.
Trivia[]
- While he hasn't appeared in the anime directly, Okkeruipe was among the candidates for the 47 Yōkai Warriors of Hokkaido in the 2007 anime adaptation.
