Onmoraki (陰摩羅鬼 (おんもらき) Onmoraki, lit. Demon who corrupts from the shadows), or Inmoraki, is a bird yōkai and the main antagonist of the story An Odd Fellow.

Appearance[]

Onmoraki has the appearance of a giant bird, with bat-like wings, three legs, the middle being the shortest, a head with three eyes and hair surrounding the back of his head.

Personality[]

In the manga, Onmoraki is very vengeful, sadistically laughing while attacking the ones who think destroyed his home. He is capable of acting like Keiko near perfectly, only revealing his true form in certain slip-ups.

History[]

Shonen Magazine/1968 Anime[]

Inmoraki appears in episode #64 of the first anime adaptation, Inmoraki. In this episode, his home was destroyed to make way for a villa for a politician, and secretly lived in a fish tank inside the place.

In the present, he possessed a woman named Keiko, the partner of the politician's son, Tetsuo, and was implied to have killed her, and re-entered her body, making her act a bit strange. He temporarily leaves Keiko's body to enter the food Nezumi-Otoko and Medama-Oyaji were about to eat, but quickly retreated after Nezumi managed to throw him off his robe. He re-enters Keiko to tell Kitarō the yōkai in Tetsuo's villa was already exterminated. Keiko then drives to Tetsuo's villa to secretly kill him in his sleep, but runs away again as Kitarō attacks him. The next day, he reappears as Keiko to drive Kitarō and Nezumi-Otoko away, but his plans fail. As a result, he slips a sleeping drug in a cup of coffee for one of them to drink. He was then asked questions by Kitarō, who was disguised as a painter. After answering all the questions, Inmoraki's body left Keiko and was temporarily bounded to the canvas Kitarō was using, but eventually escaped while trapped inside a bubble, chasing Nezumi-Otoko. He then fell asleep after eating Kitarō's soul, which still had the sleeping drug he placed.

Onmoraki Illustration

Illustration of Onmoraki by Shigeru Mizuki.

Onmoraki are bird-demons with black feathers that are created from the spirits of freshly-dead corpses. They are great at mimicry, perfectly able to replicate voices. They appear near temples, particularly in the presence of neglectful priests, sneaking up on those who are sleeping and surprise them, scolding them with their own voices. They vanish after the priests wake up in terror.[3] Legends of the Onmoraki originate from China.

Mizuki's illustration of Onmoraki is more faithful to the original depiction and was later used for the design of Gokurakuchō.

Trivia[]

  • The Onmoraki's design is based on a generic, three-eyed, bat-like yōkai from the print "Shinban Obakezukushi".
  • There once existed a misconception that the design of Gigan from the Godzilla franchsie was inspired by Mizuki's depictions of Onmoraki as one of Gigan's designers was named "Mizuki", however this was later confirmed as a coincidence.[4][5][6]
