Legend[]
Bekatarō, also known as Bekuwatarō or Beroritarō or Akanbei, was recorded in Hyakki Yagyō Emaki from Edo period.
Mizuki renamed this yōkai as Peroritarō, and came up with the backstory that he was once a human boy with an endless appetite, able to eat 10 or 20 servings in a single sitting. Eventually, his parents had enough of him eating all the time and kicked him out of the house, with Tarō being forced to beg for food on the streets. But no matter how much food was given to him, Tarō's appetite was never satisfied until he decided to eat human flesh. So whenever Peroritarō appeared on the street, people would run away to avoid being eaten by him.
Trivia[]
- Perori means swallowing, licking, fast-eating, or tongue-showing in the Japanese language.
