Satori (サトリ Satori, lit. Enlightened) is a yōkai that lives in GeGeGe Forest. He has been portrayed as both a friend and a foe of Kitarō.

Appearance[]

In the manga, Satori is an ape-like yōkai with light-colored skin and fur that cover the majority of his body, excluding his face, hands and feet. He has round eyes, that are often in an angry expression, with both irises pointing in different directions. His teeth are also noticeably flat.[1]

Within the 1971 anime, Satori is a yōkai with pink skin, a balding head with white hair by the side and a matching beard. He wears a dark gray robe with loose, long sleeves.[2]

Within the 1996 anime, Satori is an ape-like yōkai with yellow skin and gray fur that cover the majority of his body, excluding his face, hands and feet. His eyes are white with blue irises, both pointing in different directions.[3]

Personality[]

In the manga, Satori is a close ally to the other yōkai in GeGeGe Forest, making sure to tell them about Qi's plan, and so is quick to use his mind-reading powers to share exclusive intel about others. He also notices Nezumi-Otoko leaving the others and calls him out. He is also a good fighter, however his injuries sustained in battle led him to being almost entirely covered in bandages.

Legend[]

Satori is an ape yōkai from the Gifu Prefecture with the power to read minds. They live in the mountains and use their psychic ability to torment humans.

The Satori is said to be modeled after the Jueyuan, known as Kakuen or Yamako in Japan, from Chinese mythology.

Once, a lumberjack was working in the mountains when he found a Satori named Omoi. Omoi proceeded to terrorize the lumberjack by reciting his every thought out loud. Fearing that trying to run away would leave Omoi eating him, as Omoi openly recited, the lumberjack realized there was nothing he could do to get away from Omoi and resumed his work. As Omoi came closer and ready to devour the lumberjack, the lumberjack's axe hit one of the splinters, sending it into Omoi's eyes and blinding him. Terrified that he was unable to predict something, Omoi retreated into the mountains.
