Nightmare! Yōkai Makura-Gaeshi is the 15th episode of the 1996 GeGeGe no Kitarō anime.

Synopsis[]
In an area where a young boy jumps on tree stumps, a strange-looking person tells him to stop, but he disobeys him. It's revealed this is actually a dream, as the boy soon wakes up. The next day, it's revealed the boy, Yōichi, is classmates with Shōta, however he's too busy with school to play during recess, pulling out a digital planner. While in class, Yōichi tells Yūko he has fun during his dreams to compensate for his business while awake. After going back home and sleeping at night, the strange man appears near Yōichi's bed. Meanwhile in his dream, the strange man lures Yōichi into staying in the Dream World.
The next day, Yōichi's classmates start to worry he may be missing, and Yūko thinks it might have something to do with his dreams. Nezumi-Otoko unexpectedly enters Yōichi's house, and tells his mother he might be lost in his dreams. At night, Nezumi goes to the GeGeGe House to tell GeGeGe no Kitarō Wiki Yōichi has gone missing, but gets embarassed after the boy tells him he already found that out after getting a letter from Yūko! When Kitarō recalls how Yūko wrote how Shōichi's dreams were the same every night, Medama-Oyaji realizes the yōkai Makura-Gaeshi might be responsible for his disappearance. Medama adds that the Dream World is more powerful than the normal world, making children more prone to permanently stay in it. If a child spends too much time in the Dream World, Makura-Gaeshi lures then deeper, and forces them to have a nightmare where their soul is eaten! At night, Kitarō and Nezumi-Otoko use the flame yōkai Tsurube-Bi as a guide when going to Mayoi no Yama (迷いの山, Mt. Confusion). A bright rainbow appears near the end of the mountaintop, blinding Nezumi, and acts as a bridge to the Dream World. Kitatō manages to walk just fine on the rainbow, however Nezumi-Otoko falls when attempting to cross it himself. Nezumi eventually hops on the rainbow after Kitarō lends him one of his geta.
While sleeping in a hammock in the middle of a jungle in the Dream World, Makura-Gaeshi overhears Kitarō and Nezumi-Otoko calling for Yōichi. Eventually, Kitarō finds Yōichi, but he's unconscious and wrapped inside a silk cocoon. Makura-Gaeshi's hand suddebly appears from the bushes and throws sand at Kitarō's face, making him sleep. After sensing his strength by smelling him, Makura-Gaeshi decides to decapitate Kitarō with a saw to eat. Medama-Oyaji runs to ask Nezumi-Otoko for help, but the hanyō has already given up on looking for Yōichi and is seen resting. Nezumi comes back to his senses after Medama tells him to grab a large boulder of rock salt, which he then throws at Makura-Gaeshi, making his right arm melt. Kitarō manages to wake up, but Nezumi-Otoko runs away with Yōichi's body. Kitarō catches up to Nezumi, holding a bag containing Makura-Gaeshi's melted arm to use as bait if he ever shows up in the real world. The two of them narrowly avoid falling as the rainbow fades away.
The next day, Nezumi-Otoko steals a bucket of salt from a daiko seller by breathing his Bad Breath on him. At night, Kitarō sits with Yōichi inside of a Buddhist temple to tell him about the plan to defeat Makura-Gaeshi. Sure enough, Makura-Gaeshi and the rainbow reappear, but the yōkai is ambushed by Kitarō's Hair Needles, Nurikabe rising from the ground, and Konaki-Jijiii grabbing his back. Makura-Gaeshi manages to break free and diverts Sunakake-Babaa's sand, and uses his own sand to make everyone in the Kitarō Family sleep. In Sunakake's dream, she's visited by a young, human businessman as she combs near the waterfall of youth. In Konaki's dream, he sleeps on a young, human woman's back while she walks in a misty valley. In Neko-Musume's dream, she picks flowers in a field with Kitarō. Finally, in Nurikabe's dream, he bathes in an onsen. Makura-Gaeshi manages to grab Kitarō's geta in his mouth so that he can't go back in the Dream World to get Yōichi, as he plans to kidnap him again. Makura-Gaeshi dodges an attack from Nezumi-Otoko, and heads outside, however Kitarō and Ittan-Momen catch up. Kitarō chokes Makura-Gaeshi with his hair, restraining him so that Ittan can pour a bag of rock salt on him. Makura-Gaeshi melts as the Kitarō Family wakes up. The next day, Yōichi is reunited with his mother, and his father, whom the latter just came back home from a trip. Yōichi's family and Yūko thank Kitarō, meanwhile Makura-Gaeshi's soul goes back to the Dream World.
