Synopsis[]

In a street in the middle of the night, a salaryman shouts out he can't operate a computer in the office, throwing a soda can. A mysterious man wearing a black trench coat and fedora appears, and tells the man, named Toshihiko Tsutsui, they can take him back to a simpler times in the past, also seemingly entrancing him with their hands. The next day, Toshihiko and his daughter go to work and school, and the mysterious man from last night watches them from outside the house as they walk away, but only Toshihiko notices them. In the GeGeGe House, Medama-Oyaji learns from a newspaper that middle-aged people in the prime of their working lives suddenly dying, and feels concerned. Neko-Musume calls to Kitarō from outside, holding a letter from Yūko. Earlier this day, Yūko saw Harumi, who is her classmate and Toshihiko's daughter, drawing him while the others were drawing the outside environment, a forest. Nezumi-Otoko suddenly appears, and tells the girls that a yōkai might be responsible for Toshihiko losing weight while becoming more stressed. Nezumi offers to help Harumi, under the guise of being a member of the Yōkai Problem Research Institute (妖怪問題研究所, Yōkai Mondai Kenkyūjo), but just before he is about to get her money, Kitarō and Neko-Musume appear to confront him. After Neko claws up Nezumi-Otoko, Yūko introduces Harumi to Kitarō and Medama-Oyaji.

At night, after Toshihiko and Harumi go back home, the former is noticeably very thin, even after eating dinner. Toshihiko secretly goes outside to buy a soda, and laments how his weight loss might be because of him "going to the World Beyond (向こうの世界, Mūko no Sekai) soon". The mysterious man leads reappears and leads Toshihiko towards a small hokora in an alleyway, making both of them disppear into the other world. Kitarō and Neko-Musume, who were tracking Toshihiko down, go to tye alleyway, but him, the man, and the hokora are all missing, but the former senses Yōkai Activity. Meanwhile, Toshihiko is transported into a village around the Showa Era. It's shown in the past how Toshihiko and his friends would often stand near the buses to hear their sounds, spin tops together, and he starts to hear the Kamishibai stall move. Toshihiko turns younger and eats dessert given by the mysterious man as he watches the illustrated story. The mysterious storyteller suddenly monologues how the more food people eat in this world makes their souls more susceptible to be sucked away. After going back home, Toshihiko starts to get more wrinkly and more focused on the World Beyond, and the mysterious storyteller begins to beckon to him the next day. Meanwhile in a bamboo forest, Sunakake-Babaa tells Kitarō and the others that the World Beyond is actually a place in Yomi that forms into an "ideal" city for people who are mentally weary. Nezumi-Otoko starts to think of himself being served food by a harem of beautiful ladies, but Neko-Musume reminds him it's a bad place. Sunakake adds that anyone who enters the World Beyond slowly gets their soul permanently stuck there. Back in Yūko's school, she asks Harumi why she's so worried about her father. Harumi fears that Toshihiko might not attend in time for her class Parent-Teacher Conference and her presentation about him, but Yūko assures her Kitarō will deal with it.

At night, Kitarō and the others follow the mysterious storyteller, and Sunakake-Babaa pulls out a spyglass called the Yōkai Spyglass (妖怪達眼鏡, Yōkai-Tachi Megane), and sees through Toshihiko's soul, which is smaller than usual. Kitarō tries to tell Toshihiko to stop going to the World Beyond, but the mysterious storyteller takes him by force, and the hokora disappears before the heroes can do anything about it. While in the World Beyond, Toshihiko is reunited, meanwhile in the Real World, Sunakake-Babaa throws sand where the hokora was, revealing it was just turned invisible, and so Kitarō and the others are able to enter. While in the World Beyond, the heroes split up to look for Toshihiko. Nezumi-Otoko manages to find Toshihiko and his friends, however they surround him with plans to beat them up. The boy's fight is interrupted by some of their mothers calling them back home. After washing his hands with his father at home, Toshihiko realizes what it really means to be a parent. Toshihiko's peace is broken after his mom hits Nezumi with a broom, as the hanyō went in their home to eat the onigiri prepared for him! Toshihiko's parents run after Nezumi-Otoko, causing Kitarō to spot the boy's cries for help.

Kitarō tries to convince Toshihiko to go back to the real world, but his parents reappear and tell him to stay. Toshihiko, now an adult, cries out to his parents about his own family, but the World Beyond starts to shift. What was once a town, turns into a sickly, brown void, and the mysterious storyteller roars and turns into the yōkai Kubire-Oni! "I was so close!" Kubire-Oni shouts, and Medama-Oyaji tries to convince him to bring Toshihiko back to the real world, but the yōkai angrily declines. All Kubire-Oni wanted was to kill Toshihiko when he was distracted and steal his soul! Since Kubire-Oni also ruled Yomi, Kitarō's Hair Needles and chanchanko are ineffective. The other heroes retreat with Kitarō, but Sunakake-Babaa pulls-up her Yōkai Spyglass again, and spots a hole in sky that leads to an exit. Meanwhile, Nezumi-Otoko simply hides from Kubire-Oni, as Toshihiko cries about leaving his parents behind. Kitarō uses his Yōkai Ocarina's whio to cling to a nearby utility pole, that also stands in the real world, and is able to get everyone back just before Kubire-Oni catches them.  Kubire-Oni pops out of his hokora to get Toshihiko back, however Kitarō's Hair Needles and chanchanko now hurt him, and the yōkai is defeated after being covered in the latter. Sunakake-Babaa says that her and Medama-Oyaji will bury Kubire-Oni in a sacred mountain where a reliable and great monk lives. The next day, Toshihiko, now back to normal, attends Harumi's presentation about how good of a father he is in her class.
