Synopsis[]

Late at night, a mysterious voice says "Who is neglecting the graves? Why are they leaving the temple in disrepair?", being heard near a temple. An old villager explains to his daughter that a demon named Onmoraki appears if a temple is left in disrepair, and also revives the souls of the dead and wanders about in search of the vitality of the living. Meanwhile, the two see Nezumi-Otoko wandering around outside. Nezumi eventually collapses from starvation near a temple, but is taken inside by a young girl. The girl treats Nezumi-Otoko to many food. The girl even gives Nezumi water after he chokes on a fish bone! The girl, Sayuri Koike, finds Nezumi-Otoko charming, and wants to marry him as he helps clean and run the temple with her, as she's been living inside alone ever since the head priest passed away.

The next day, Nezumi sends a letter to Kitarō, saying he's engaged with Sayuri, and his friends soon arrive to tell him the hanyō became the temple's new head priest! At night, after Nezumi-Otoko does his job, Sayuri gives him a small meal, but mysteriously tells him not to peek into her room as she styles her hair. The mysterious voice from last night tells Sayuri he'll go to the village to attack, but the girl says she no longer needs to be a bad person. The voice, which comes from a large, bird-shaped shadow, seems to be keeping Sayuri alive, but she says she has no plans on living any longer, as she wants to quit her job in the temple after Nezumi-Otoko helped her. Suddenly, Nezumi asks Sayuri to drink with him, and as she says she'll go outside for a while instead, the hanyō notices her shadow exposes her skeleton! Nezumi just rationalizes this as him seeing things while drunk. Meanwhile, the Kitarō Family visit the village near the temple,Konaki-Jijii even dressing up in proper clothes, and hear the scream of a man being chased by something in the woods. Kitarō and the others rush to stop the thing, which was a bird-like yōkai perched on top of a woman's body, however it walks away just as they get close. Just as the man wakes up, he faints as he sees Sunakake-Babaa and Konaki-Jijii!

Outside of the temple, three villagers carry a coffin. The villagers enter the temple and tell Nezumi-Otoko they're holding a funeral service for one of their grandmothers, an orphaned woman named Otake died years earlier. One of the villagers says that they're relived at the fact that the body won't be wandering outside anymore. When Nezumi recommends Sayuri can help, the villagers timidly tell him she died (specifically when she was 19 years-old) years ago as well! Nezumi-Otoko frantically runs towards the graveyard, and sure enough finds a grave with Sayuri's name! Nezumi goes back to the temple and sits in the corner, terrified, and gets scared after Kitarō and the others open the door. Nezumi-Otoko retaliates by hugging Kitarō, making Neko-Musume blush. Medama-Oyaji says he already has a plan to defeat the Onmoraki in the village, involving "The Secret Art of Revealing Identities". Nezumi-Otoko hold back his tears as Sayuri, who Onmoraki was secretly possessing, enters the room. A "genius painter" (Kitarō wearing a kimono and beard), pulls out a scroll and says he'll ask Sayuri 108 questions, drawing a dot on the scroll after each answer. Nezumi reluctantly lets the painter ask what is Sayuri's favorite color, favorite flower, favorite food, time she wakes up, when she goes to bed, whether she prefer dark or light places, whether she look in the mirror every day, and whether she has dreams every night. Sayuri says her favorite color is white, her favorite flower is lilies, her favorite food is sweet potatoes, she wakes up at 4am every morning and goes to bed at 10pm, likes bright places, and likes looking in the mirror. Nezumi-Otoko starts to recall how Medama-Oyaji formulated the plan, and starts to worry about what will happen to Sayuri. When the painter asks Sayuri if she likes eating souls, she replies yes, causing Onmoraki's voice to be heard alongside hers, and collapses. All of the dots on the painter's scroll are connected, forming the shape of Onmoraki. Nezumi-Otoko tries to comfort Sayuri after she collapses, but he gets grabbed by a beak as Onmoraki emerges!

Onmoraki realizes the painter was GeGeGe no Kitarō after the boy removes his disguise and reveals the rest of the Kitarō Family, and he loses grip on Nezumi as the hanyō farts in fear. Nezumi-Otoko gets thrown into Otake's coffin, causing it to open and the hanyō to faint at the sight of ths old woman's dead body! Onmoraki then flies out of the temple to hide into the graveyard, and Medama-Oyaji tells Kitarō the demon was formed from the restless and unhonored spirits in the place. Suddenly, the ghost of a samurai attacks Kitarō, who defeats it by covering him with his chanchanko. At the same time, Neko-Musume uses her claws to slash the ghost of a farmer, but after the two ghosts disappear, Konaki-Jijii and Sunakake-Babaa are chased by the ghost of a woman! Neko also gets corned by another ghost carrying a sword, as Sunakake and Konaki run towards the hanyō to protect her, as Kitarō is grabbed by Onmoraki's beak. Konaki-Jijii manages to save Neko-Musume by turning both of them into stone, just as the ghost swings his sword and disappears. Onmoraki grabs Kitarō by the head with his foot, and flies to throw him in the middle of a sharp tree branch. Just as Onmoraki flies towards the branch, he gets knocked out and Kitarō falls on the ground instead, as Nurikabe rose from it and blocked the branch. Onmoraki gets back up, but gets  his body restrained by Ittan-Momen. As Ittan flaps his tail, the scroll with the image of Onmoraki is torn as Kitarō holds it, flying towards the demon's eyes and trapping him inside.

Back in the temple, Sayuri, now unpossessed, reaches out to Nezumi-Otoko, who runs towards the Kitarō Family in the graveyard and tells them not to burn the scroll with Onmoraki. Since Medama-Oyaji realized Sayuri's body was mistreated and that Nezumi actually help fix and rebuild the temple, he decides to let the others bury the scroll instead of burning it. Sayuri thanks everyone for their help, however she suddenly goes limp. Nezumi-Otoko tells Sayuri how much she helped him despite being a hanyō, but the girl's body suddenly glows. Sayuri then talks about how kind Nezumi treated her, as both her and the hanyō cry. Nezumi-Otoko, not even looking at the girl's body, cries out he doesn't want Sayuri go away. Nezumi criticizes Medama-Oyaji for not thinking out his plan, but Sayuri assures the hanyō it is for the best and that he'll find a good wife soon. Sayuri says goodbye, and floats up into the sky while turning into a white smoke, as Nezumi-Otoko breaks down in tears. Even the Kitarō Family, sans Kitarō and Konaki-Jijii, cry with Nezumi. In the morning, Kitarō and Neko-Musume realize Nezumi-Otoko actually helped rebuild the temple. Meanwhile, Nezumi went back to the graveyard to pray at Sayuri's grave. Nezumi-Otoko jokingly says Sayuri might be hiding, but then notices a small, white lily behind her grave, the same color as her soul, and cries tears of joy. It seems money is not the only thing on Nezumi-Otoko's mind, perhaps he just needs love...
