Synopsis[]
Nezumi-Otoko runs in the rain after attempting to look for treasure, and spots the yōkai Kasa-Bake jumping. Nezumi then hatches his latest scheme! "Nezumi-Sennin" visits Kasa-Bake, and tells him that it has been over 120 years since he spoke to a human. Nezumi tells Kasa to disguise himself into a human using Kitarō's chanchanko so that he can experience true happiness. After the rain stops, Kitarō flies on Ittan-Momen to celebrate the opening of Sunakake-Babaa's Yōkai Apartments, but his gift gets knocked out by a flying and spinning Kasa-Bake. Kasa hypnotizes Kitarō, but though Medama-Oyaji snaps him out of his strance, Ittan-Momen isn't as lucky, and falls. Ittan lands on a tree, meanwhile Kitarō falls to the ground, and gets nearly hurt as Kasa-Bake floats down to slice the tree. Kitarō uses his Hair Needles against Kasa-Bake, but they get deflected as the yōkai spins. Kasa-Bake then uses a Heat Beam from his eye to make a hole in the tree and burn the grass surrounding Kitarō, but the boy uses his chanchanko to found the smoke. Suddenly, a staff hits Kitarō's head, and he falls unconscious, but not before seeing the silhouette of someone.
Kitarō wakes up inside the Yōkai Apartments with the rest of the Kitarō Family, with Neko-Musume giving him water. Kitarō realizes he's no longer wearing his chanchanko, and the only thing he can remember was being attacked by a "disc". Meanwhile, Nezumi-Sennin was trying to hold the moving chanchanko, knocking it out with his staff, and gives it to Kasa-Bake. Nezumi pulls out a book and decides that Kasa should disguise himself as a man named Jūtarō Ijūin, first president of the Ijūin Bussan company, starting out as a vegetable farmer, and died last year from overworking. Nezumi-Sennin also says he'll give Kasa-Bake a small share after he disguises himself.
Meanwhile in Jūtarō's house, his wife, an old lady, still thinks he's alive, and is simply on a long trip, saying that in the past he was reported to have died in the war but came back alive. Jūtarō's wife asks a maid to prepare sashimi, his favorite dish, for the man, but the lady hears a knock at the door. The maid then checks it out to see Jūtarō back from the dead! Kasa-Bake, who is wearing Kitarō's chanchanko as Jūtarō, is then greeted by the real Jūtarō's wife, and the maid runs away, Nezumi-Otoko watching as his plan falls into place. Kasa-Bake, now knowing what it feels to be human, is invited by Jūtarō's wife to recount stories. After Jūtarō returned from the war, him and his wife worked hard but were happy together, however as soon as they made more money and became overworked, their happiness fading. Kasa-Bake, who was previously taught by Nezumi-Sennin that money is the only way to gain happiness, is confused. Suddenly, Kasa-Bake's chanchanko tightens, confusing Jūtarō's wife. The chanchanko was sending a telepathic message to Kitarō, who is able to track down its location. After Kasa-Bake is nursed by Jūtarō's wife, he's confronted by Kitarō, who takes back his chanchanko using his hair. Kasa-Bake then transforms back into his true form, and gets lured out of the house by Kitarō, who lures him with his chanchanko. After dodging his attacks, Kitarō uses his chanchanko to cover Kasa-Bake's face, and later wrestles his body, causing him to surrender.
As the sun sets, Kasa-Bake apologizes and says he'd must've been deceived by a Sennin, and gives Kitarō an illustration of him, which looks like a certain someone. After a day of getting drunk and partying, Nezumi-Otoko is confronted by Kitarō, but instead of punishing the hanyō, he just tells Nezumi to help work on the Yōkai Apartments. Kasa-Bake then properly asks Kitarō to borrow his chanchanko, as he still needs to properly say goodbye to Jūtarō's wife. Kasa-Bake tells Jūtarō's wife how much he missed her, and the two thank each other as Kitarō happily watches.
