Synopsis[]
At night, two criminals hide behind the police under a bridge. A news report reveals them as Ōguro, a land speculator who repeatedly commits fraud and extortion, and his subordinate Jirō. This report is watched by Kitarō, Nezumi-Otoko, and Neko-Musume, as they all eat ramen. Just then, the criminals enter the ramen shop, Ōguro condescendingly patting Kitarō's head and shouting at the cook to make ramen. Kitarō, Neko, and Nezumi are about to go home after eating, but Ōguro holds them hostage, firing three shots from his gone after Kitarō disagrees. Kitarō then falls in front of the shop's window, as the crowd is in shock. Nezumi-Otoko and Neko-Musume see if Kitarō is okay, but he gets up to stop Neko from chasing the escaping criminals, and spits out the gun's bullets, the crowd in shock again. Ōguro and Jirō hide in an alley, with Ōguro asking if Jirō could call his mother, but she already passed away. Jirō then suddenly sees Kitarō's head in the darkness, and later a light that rolls as a multi-colored diamond. Ōguro sees a city inside the gem, and says he would love to claim it, however both of them get sucked inside it. Kitarō and his friends appear out of darkness, as the boy rhetorically asks where they're going.
Ōguro and Jirō awake to find themselves in a desolate city, and try to call for people, but Daikokou only finds a single mannequin. As Jirō visits a toy shop, a dolls eyes follow him. Jirō later sees a toy robot, and remembers begging to buy it from his mother when he was still a boy. It's implied the fact Jirō's mother didn't buy it is what made him turn to stealing as an adult. Jirō later regroups with Ōguro, who stole the clothes of the mannequin and some rings. Since no one was here besides Jirō, Ōguro uses the government office's computer to change the land title. Strangely, the land manages to be sold, as it sells rapidly. When checking an ATM machine, Jirō and Ōguro get flooded with money. The two are watched by Kitarō on the diamond. Ōguro and Jirō stuff their money into bags in the back of a sports car and plan to live a life of leisure, and laugh. They suddenly hear the voice of the boy they "killed" coming from out of nowhere, telling them they can't leave. Ōguro and Jirō are later told by Kitarō that the city they're in is Jigoku, and a giant eye appears in the sky! As Ōguro and Jirō frantically drive away, they see the city slowly disappearing, and fall. Ōguro and Jirō now wake up to a desert, their car now destroyed. As a result, they hold the money bags themselves.
Ōguro curses to the voice from earlier, but Jirō collapses and tries to rest. Ōguro tells him to get back up, but they both see Sunakake-Babaa in the distance, watering grass. When the two try to drink her water, she teleports and says they can only drink if they can ask properly. Ōguro says they can give away their money in exchange for the water, but Sunakake thinks money is useless and declines. Instead, Sunakake-Babaa tells them to trade the water for laughing. As the sun sets, Jirō reminds Ōguro they could never smile again, and the two hear and see a soba cart pulled by Konaki-Jijii. Konaki tells them they can only soba if they smile, however Ōguro tells him they can no longer. As a result, Konaki-Jijii tells them they can eat, but only if they lose their youth, and they comply. As night falls, Ōguro and Jirō, now old men, spot a hotel named Nekoya. When they enter, they're greeted by the receptionist, Neko-Musume dressed as a maid. Like the previous two places Ōguro and Jirō visited, they can't pay with money, and in this case have to pay with the memories of their mother's. Jirō then tells Ōguro his mother died 15 years ago, when he was still young, and she promised him something that he could never tell. As a result, even though Ōguro agrees with Neko, Jirō runs away. As Neko-Musume leads Ōguro leads him to his room, he actually gets pushed into a bottomless pit. In the morning, Kitarō says good morning as Jirō wakes up, as he's now back in the alley. Kitarō thanks Jirō for still loving his mother. Nezumi-Otoko asks Kitarō what happened to Daikokou, and the boy shows him the diamond, the criminal still trapped in Jigoku.

Trivia[]
- One of the toys in the toy shop Jirō visits is based on the kaijū Kanegon from Ultra Q. This isn't the first time he's been referenced in a Shigeru Mizuki-related work, as he also appeared in the design of a sheet of money in an Akuma-kun manga chapter. Kanegon himself was also based off the yōkai Kanadama.
